Reddit.com is one of the world’s most popular social media websites.  Wallstreetbets is a subreddit that has had a greater impact on the US stock market than any other social media website.  ( A subreddit is a website within the Reddit site itself and is run by users of Reddit.)

 

Beginning about January 13, 2021, wallstreetbets moderators and users began advising everyone to buy the stock of Gamestop.  As a result of this, during the next two weeks the stock price went up “to the moon,” from under $20 to over $475.  If you invested $1000 on Gamestop stock, you would have made a profit of $20,000 if you sold at the top less than two weeks later. 

 

CNBC (the financial news channel) claimed Gamestop stock surged because of wallstreetbets. Nearly overnight, virtually all professional stock traders suddenly knew about wallsteetbets and started to read their posts on the subreddit. 

 

There are currently about 9 million followers of wallstreetbets.  This is their URL:
